I grew up in Brampton, so when I was little and watched the news with my grandpa I always remember seeing Dave Devall on the screen.
Dave Devall wasn’t the main anchor on CTV Toronto, he was actually the weatherman, or if we want to get fancy the meteorologist. But, he was always so funny and engaging when he was doing the weather that he was the star of the show in my eyes.
I always thought the stars of CTV Toronto were so cool, but never did I ever stop to think that one day that could be me. I never dreamed about a career in broadcast journalism. I never really even thought a position where you’re so in the public eye would be possible because realistically it’s rare to get those kinds of jobs.
But I don’t think that anymore. A career in broadcast journalism would be so cool and I’m sure if I worked hard enough it wouldn’t be as unattainable as I originally thought.
At the MediaPlex, I’ve had the opportunity to try all sorts of things such as writing newspaper articles, planning events, being the liaison between the media and various events, interviewing local businesses and media personalities, anchoring the Live at 1 news broadcast and most recently creating and hosting a radio segment produced by journalism students Zander Kelly and Ryan Percy.
I’ve also realized that my future career options are much broader than I originally thought! Even though I’m studying public relations, it doesn’t mean that I’m limited to positions like ‘public relations specialist’ or ‘public relations consultant’
No, the sky is the limit when it comes to possible career paths. Because of all the different opportunities allotted to me at the MediaPlex, even a career in broadcast journalism is a realistic option! While I definitely won’t be the next Dave Devall, because I don’t know diddly-squat about weather patterns and the science behind them, maybe one day I’ll be an anchor on CTV.
What’s your dream career that you never would have thought possible as a kid? I’d love to know!
